At first glance, the Sports Immortals Museum in Boca Raton looks more like a hoarder’s house than a curated collection open to the public. In the 1940s, Joel Platt started collecting baseball cards, then spent the rest of his life meeting sports legends and gathering anything from signed postage stamps to Muhammad Ali’s signature white robe. (There are more than 100,000 items on boxing in his collection alone.) He even has Jim Thorpe’s 1912 Olympic scrapbook, complete with all the letters friends sent congratulating Thorpe on his victory in Stockholm.
