10 Things to Love About Delray Beach in Winter

From the best vintage shopping to dining with the top area chefs, we share the top reasons travelers flock to Delray Beach this winter.

1. Small-Town Charm with a City Feel

Described as “Mayberry by day, Manhattan by night” (but without the snow), Delray is a hot spot for longtime mom-and-pop shops and good food, like the Green Owl Restaurant and Latitudes.

2. Making Waves

A surf academy is one thing, but a surf academy that offers beach sports, snorkeling, shark feeding, and sand castle contests, in addition to surfing lessons on the crashing waves of Delray Beach, is a different (and very fun) animal indeed.

3. Old School, New Arts

When two early-twentieth-century elementary and high schools were on the fast track for demolition in the 1980s, the town raised money and converted them into a museum and theater. Known together as the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square, they’re home to international fine art, world-class musicals, and art and photography classes.

4. The Ability to Seat a Party of 1,000

Every March, Savor the Avenue brings in Florida’s longest table, stretching 600 yards on Atlantic Avenue. Roughly 1,000 diners dig in to different prix-fixe menus from 20 top area restaurants.

5. Japanese Tea Ceremonies

Monthly from October to June, you can take part in a formal Japanese tea ceremony in a true Seishinan tea house at Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens. Who would have thought you’d be trading your bikini for a kimono this vacation?

6. The Delray Wreck

Touted as one of the best dives along the Gold Coast, the British ship SS Inchulva lays only 150 yards off the beach, is easy to find, and is great for snorkelers since the water is no more than 25 feet deep. Not to mention the hundreds of colorful species include sea robin (named for their large fins that open and close like a bird’s), star coral, and stingrays.

7. A Wild Place in the City

The Wakohadatchee Wetlands are nestled on Delray’s western edge, and it’s one of the quietest and greenest spots in the city. When it’s not too hot and humid, it’s time to patrol the area on an elevated walkway and glimpse exotic birds, alligators, and curious iguanas.

8. Indulgent Experiences

Need to soothe tired muscles, get your Zen on or refresh your manicure? Whatever it is you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it at the Tammy Fender Spa. Spanning two floors and a robust spa menu full of head-to-toe offerings, it’s obvious why this ultimate pampering destination deserve a spot on the list.

9. A Nautical Escape

There’s so much to love about the ocean, and Drift restaurant knows that better than most. An ode to the waters, this new culinary gem offers an immersive experience for ocean-loving diners – from its nautical-inspired décor and dining spaces down its seafood-forward menu. Sail away!

10. A Haven for Foodies

Standing four-stories tall, the Delray Beach Market is a neon-colored playground for foodies who don’t want to be confined to the menu of a single restaurant. In its hallowed halls, you’ll find 25 eateries to choose from as well as rotating lineup of pop-ups. In short: It’s got everything — even a first-floor central bar serving up a rainbow of drinks.
