From an amazing sunset seen from A1A or hundreds of lights shining to the heavens, this city is full of things to do both at night and during the day come the fall and winter season. If you’re visiting town during this time of year, make sure to add these activities to your to-do list.
Drive the Big Kahuna
A1A is locally known as the big kahuna of scenic Florida drives, and it’s easy to see why. The 20-mile route that runs between the Atlantic and Intracoastal Waterway from Delray Beach to Palm Beach takes you through quaint Old Florida towns, mega-mansions, wetlands, and gorgeous beach scenes. Considering that Florida sees the least amount of tourists in the fall, this is the best time to hit the road, without worrying about traffic, parking, or not being able to find a spot at any of the beaches you pass.
Mingle with Some Manatees
Because manatees do not have thick blubber layers, they seek refuge in natural and man-made warm water areas during the late fall and winter months (usually mid-November through March), migrating to areas from the Indian River Lagoon and southward. While manatees have been spotted in the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach during this time of year, if you want a surefire opportunity to see them, head 20 miles north to Manatee Lagoon in West Palm. Why Manatee Lagoon? Because it’s home to a warm-water outflow, generated by the Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center, that these gentle giants love to huddle and snuggle in.
Learn About the Florida’s Marine Life
Located in a historic 1936 beachfront home, Sandoway Discovery Center is a unique nature center that lets you get up close to turtles, stingrays, and sharks (though currently under construction, the saltwater tank – actually the home’s former pool – is the spot for daily nurse shark feedings). Families and their tots will particularly enjoy learning more about the center’s resident creatures, including a red rat snake, python, alligator, common snapping turtle and so much more. And don’t leave without browsing the 300-gallon coral tank, which offers a glimpse into ocean life – fostering love and appreciation for our magical planet.
Take a ‘Spooky’ Bike Ride Through Town
Every year, masses of riders sporting pointy hats roll through Downtown Delray Beach in their tricked out bikes (resembling brooms!). It’s all part of the Annual Witches of Delray Beach Bike Ride, held in partnership with the Achievement Centers for Children & Families. If you’re in town for the event, there’s no better way to celebrate the spooky season than by pedaling through town in your most fashionable witchy wear – all while breaking a good sweat. The ride ends with a fun-filled music and awards presentation at Old School Square Outdoor Pavilion Stage.
Have a Gourd-ous Day at the Pumpkin Patch
One of the best parts of fall is embracing all the autumnal activities that make us feel warm and fuzzy inside. Nothing encapsulates that feeling better than a visit to a pumpkin patch. So, round up the kiddos, and head over to the Boca Pumpkin Patch Festival. Held annually every October, the festival transforms the open space of the Mizner Park Amphitheater into a true fall playground. Admission includes access to the pumpkin patch (with more than 2,500 pumpkins!), carnival rides, cornstalk maze, a dress-your-own scarecrow village, and so much more.
Join in on the Holiday Fun Downtown
During November and December, Downtown Delray Beach springs into the holiday season with a slew of festive activities and events visitors shouldn’t miss. One of the biggest highlights? The city’s annual tree lighting ceremony. Delray Beach’s famous 100-foot Christmas tree comes alive with a cacophony of lights, putting on a magical show for spectators. Also not to be missed: Old School Square Park, which will play host to the city’s holiday village every Tuesday, along with a handful of other events announced on their website.
Watch the Twinkling Lights at Night
If there’s something we all love during the winter season, it’s this: over-the-top holiday displays that inspire a sense of childlike awe. Always held the first Friday in December in partnership with the city of Delray Beach, the Boynton Beach Holiday Boat Parade is a must-add to your holiday programming. Think: vessels decorated in inflatables, holiday lights galore, and carolers that are then paraded through the C-15 canal from Boynton Beach to Delray. The best seats are on the bridges and right along the water so arrive early to save your spot.
